È da sfatare la credenza che la pasta sia stata introdotta in Italia dalla Cina, tramite Marco Polo. Infatti, nel 1279, quando l’esploratore veneziano si trovava ancora in Oriente, il notaio genovese Ugolino Scarpa redasse il testamento di un tal Ponzio Bastone il quale, fra le altre cose, lasciava ai suoi eredi una cassa piena di maccheroni.

Contrary to popular belief, pasta has not been introduced to the Western world by Marco Polo after his return from China. In fact, in 1279 when the Venetian explorer was still in the Orient, a Genovese notary, Ugolino Scarpa, wrote the will of a certain Ponzio Bastone who bequeathed to his heirs, among other things, a “chest full of macaroni”.
