La prima fu una catastrofe spettacolare! Quando Agostino Chigi, un famoso patrono delle arti romano, scrisse nel suo diario: "ieri sera andò in scena a Argentina una nuova burletta del maestro Rossini... con esito infelice" nessuno poteva immaginare che "Il Barbiere di Siviglia" sarebbe diventato uno dei classici dell'opera buffa.

The Barber of Sevilla was first presented to the public at the Teatro Argentina in Rome in 1816. The first performance was a spectacular failure! When Agostino Chigi, a famous Roman patron of the arts, noted in his diary: 'Yesterday a new comedy by Maestro Rossini was performed at the Argentina... with UNFORTUNATE results' no one would have guessed that "Il Barbiere di Siviglia" became one of the most famous pieces of comic opera.
