| Il clamoroso e inaspettato successo del "Postino" ha fatto del film il maggiore incasso di tutti i tempi di una pellicola non americana sul suolo statunitense, ma la cifra, pur ragguardavole, rappresenta negli standard hollywoodiani un entità assolutamene modesta: il costo medio di un film americano non indipendente si è assestato attualmente sui sessanta milioni di dollari, e ventitrè milioni incassati al botteghino rappresenterebbero per gran parte delle produzioni un disastro incolmabile. | The glamourous and unexpected success of "The Postman" was the biggest profit ever for a non-American movie in the States. The amount, although considerable, is by Hollywood standards, a very modest one. The average cost of making a non-independent American movie is currently about 60 million dollars. 23 million of gross income would represent a disastrous flop for the majority of productions. |

È esattamente ciò che il pubblico americano pretende dal cinema italiano, al quale viene consentito un proprio spazio vitale purché non proponga problematiche odierne o divenga lo specchio dei traumatici cambiamenti in corso attualmente in Europa. Esemplare a tale riguardo il caso di "Lamerica", lo splendido film di Gianni Amelio, osannato dai critici americani ma ignorato dal grande pubblico. | Apart from their respective value, these movies found a niche in the market mostly because of the Italian image that they present to the foreign audience: a reassuring portrait where beautiful sceneries, retro atmospheres, the art of "do it yourself", positive feelings and the possibilities of poetry abound. This is exactly what the American audience expects from Italian cinema, which is allowed a certain space on condition that it does not represent current themes or does not become a mirror of the traumatic changes occurring in Europe. In this regard a perfect example is "Lamerica", the magnificent movie by Gianni Amelio, highly acclaimed by the American critics but ignored by the general public. |
