Are you a positive or negative person? (Negative sentences)

La tavola seguente mostra le parole più comuni per costruire delle frasi negative in italiano.

The following table shows the most common words to form negative sentences in Italian.

Paragona:

  • Loro non sono affatto buoni amici.
(not at all - they are not at all good friends)
  • Loro non sono mai onesti.
(not...ever, never - they are never honest)
  • Lui non ascolta più loro.
(no longer, not... anymore - he does not listen to them anymore)
  • Lui non ascolta noi voi.
(neither...nor - he does not listen neither us nor you)
  • Lui non ascolta nemmeno lei.
(not even - he doesn't even listen to her)
  • Lui non ascolta neppure lei.
(not even - he doesn't even listen to her)
  • Lui non ascolta neanche lei.
(not even - he doesn't even listen to her)
  • Lui non va ancora all'università.
(not yet - he doesn't attend the university yet)
  • Lui non chiede nulla a loro.
(not...anything, nothing - he doesn't ask anything to them)
  • Lui non chiede niente a loro.
(not...anything, nothing - he doesn't ask anything to them)

Importante: "non" precede sempre il verbo: Important: "Non" always precedes the verb:

  • Non ho amici
    (I don't have friends)

Attenzione: con "mi piace", "ti piace" etc. "non" precede il pronome: Please note: with "mi piace", "ti piace" (I like, you like) etc. "non" precedes the pronoun:

  • Non mi piace più.
    (I don't like it anymore.)

"Mai, ancora, più..." seguono il verbo. Quando vengono usati con tempi composti (come il passato prossimo) o verbi servili (come dovere, volere, potere + verbo) si inseriscono fra i due verbi: "Mai, ancora, più..." follow the verb. When used with compound tenses (like the "passato prossimo") or with modal verbs (like "dovere, volere, potere" + verb) they are placed in between the verbs:

  • Loro non sono  mai  stati buoni amici.
(They have never been good friends)
  • Lui non vuole più uscire con loro.
(He doesn't want to go out with them anymore)

A volte questi avverbi negativi possono cambiare posizione all'interno della frase a seconda dell'enfasi che si vuole dare: Sometimes these adverbs can be placed in a different position in the sentence, depending on the emphasis we want to express:

  • Tu non hai neanche studiato! = Non hai fatto niente, neanche studiare.
(You did not even study. You didn't do anything, not even studying)
  • Non hai studiato neanche tu! = Nessuno ha studiato, neanche tu.
    (Nobody studied, not even you.)

On a piece of paper, write the following sentences again in the negative form, using the negative expressions in parenthesis. Esempio: Vado al cinema con lui. (non...mai)
Non vado mai al cinema con lui.
