"A Bolognese master: Ludovico Carracci" by Gaither Stewart

Carracci

Ludovico Carracci without his cousins Annibale and Agostino is an innovation. Since "the Carracci's" were re-launched decades ago it's always been a family affair. Now after art historians have re-evaluated the role and importance of the oldest of the three Carracci's - who together revolutionized European art at the end of the 16th century - Ludovico has appeared alone in a monographic exhibit in Bologna's Museo Civico, organized by Italy's prominent art curator Andrea Emiliani. Art historians agree that Ludovico Carracci [or Lodovico, 1555-1619] deserves the attention.
The first artist to reverse the mannerist tendency and bring art back to the naturalism of the Rinascimento. Above all, a populist painter, the Bologna master explained religion to the illiterate people with his art.
He then personally guided his most famous pupils Guido Reni and Guercino. And he anticipated Caravaggio. Together with his more intellectual Carracci cousins, Ludovico is considered one of co-founders of the Baroque art that exploded in Rome in the early 17th century, before spreading to most of Europe and Latin America. Enough of the degenerations of the Mannerists, Ludovico professed. "Tingere non leccare," he taught. Paint don't polish and gloss. The new century, he believed, belonged to naturalism. Away from the artificial refinements of Mannerism. Back to the foresight of the future of the Renaissance masters Raffaello, Tiziano e Correggio.
The stuff of his work were miracles and martyrdom, crucifixions and saints. But in a naturalist vein. The path chosen later by Caravaggio. The path followed by his north Italian school. Ludovico personally adhered to the teachings of Cardinal Paleotti, the great interpreter of the Counter-reform who urged artists to paint for an illiterate people, who however could well "read" the visual language of art.
Since Ludovico Carracci's work is rooted in Bologna, a visit to the Carracci places in the historic center of the Emilian capital to see his art "at home" is a unique way to visit this magnificent city, this writer's favorite in Italy. From the Pinacoteca Nazionale to the nearby churches decorated by Ludovico, to the cloisters, museums and palazzi, the cultural walk is dazzling.
I Carracci arrivarono quasi naturalmente all'arte barocca. In the era of the Carracci, at the beginning of the 1600s, Rome was the center of world art. If Bologna was the second city of the Catholic Church, it enjoyed a special autonomy, located, but not isolated, north of the Appennine Mountains. Art in Rome was international, humanist. North Italian art was rooted in the territory. In its Gothic-Romanesque architecture. The Carracci arrived almost naturally to Baroque art. Annibale in Rome via his pompous classical bent. Ludovico in Bologna via his stubborn, irritable, stormy insistence on sweeping away the superfluous.
