Il popolo abitava nelle ._._._._._._., edifici simili ai nostri, che si sviluppavano in altezza. Usualmente le botteghe e i negozi stavano alla base delle insule. Il problema di queste costruzioni era che utilizzavano molto legno, e che nelle stanze le persone usavano fiamme libere (piccoli falò per ._._._._._._._._._. o cucinare), candele e lucerne. In questo modo, gli incendi erano frequenti e si estendevano velocemente da un'insula all'altra. Per questo, in genere i più ._._._._._._. o benestanti vivevano al piano terra, dove non avevano scale da fare, potevano scappare in caso di incendio e avevano i "bagni" vicini (cioè un apposito contenitore per gettare gli escrementi). Ai piani alti vivevano i ceti medio-poveri, servi, operai, artigiani, maestri. A volte, siccome non c'erano i "bagni" nei piani alti, invece che fare le scale e buttare gli escrementi nell'apposito contenitore, gli abitanti li ._._._._._._._._._._. fuori dalla finestra.
